Chris Sutton: I have doubts over the full-back’s defensive ability
James Tavernier’s “remarkable” influence at Rangers has been lauded by Chris Sutton, but the full-back’s defensive skills remain a source of uncertainty for him.
Tavernier has surpassed his 2023–24 season total of 25 direct goal involvements with 17 goals and 9 assists in 34 Scottish Premiership games this season.
Despite being an admirer of the Gers captain, Sutton feels that the defensive side of his game needs work.
He stated, “Tavernier’s numbers are remarkable,” in his Daily Record column [May 4]. “It’s amazing that a full-back can dish out so many assists, even though I have concerns about their defensive play.”

The 32-year-old never hides and would have more than played his part should the Light Blues go on to pip Celtic to the title this season.
However, he can also get caught out defensively, and that leaves him open to more than criticism than most in the side when the Gers fail to win.
