According to Matt Doherty, the team hopes to end the campaign on a high note and guarantee a top-half finish.
Despite not having much to play for in the final stages of the season, Matt Doherty has warned Manchester City that Wolverhampton Wanderers won’t let their standards fall this weekend. With a 5:30 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, the Midlands club is hoping to “cause a bit of a shock” by defeating City for the second time this year. One of the three Premier League games the champions have lost in 2023–24 is the 2-1 victory over Gary O’Neil’s team in the rematch in September.
A repetition this weekend would give Arsenal the upper hand in the title fight and severely damage City’s hopes of holding onto their crown. Even though City still has the game in hand, the Gunners are still in the lead at the top of the league.
While Wolves have secured their Premier League survival, they are too far away from the European positions to really fight. In contrast, Wolves have little to lose in the final three games of the season. But Doherty argued that Wolves won’t be affected by that this weekend.
“We have a full week to be ready for City. We want to be competitive in this game and give the top team in the league a little surprise because we’ve already defeated them this season,” the Irishman stated on the team’s website. “Sliding the standards would not be tolerated. Even though our results haven’t been great, we’re still working really hard to win each and every game. We have much to play for, both individually and as a club, so we’re not in vacation mode or anything like that.
Wolves, who had gone seven games without a victory across all competitions, defeated Luton Town 2-1 at Molineux last Thursday to earn much-needed relief. For us, that was enormous, Doherty remarked. “We understood that with two home games and two away games remaining, the home games were critically essential since we had not won in seven and we still wanted to finish in the top ten. Even though we came closer than necessary to win in the end, it was still a solid victory.
