J.J. McCarthy is urging the Minnesota Vikings to sign a 6,200-yard running back.

The Minnesota Vikings’ offensive building pieces include their franchise quarterback of the future, two outstanding wide receivers, and a very explosive running back. However, J.J. McCarthy, a first-round pick, might develop much more quickly if a bell-cow was added to the backfield rotation.

To fill the loss, the Vikings could also look to a well-known face.

Dalvin Cook remains an unrestricted free agent, following a brief and somewhat disastrous stint with the New York Jets last season.

Might a Minnesota homecoming be in the mix?

Bleacher Report’s Joseph Zucker lists the Minnesota Vikings among Cook’s best free agent fits.

“Minnesota signed Aaron Jones to replace leading rusher Alexander Mattison,” Zucker writes. “Ty Chandler (102 carries, 461 yards and three touchdowns) performed reasonably well as the backup too.

“Cook would provide some depth and injury insurance for a team that has a rookie quarterback (J.J. McCarthy) but isn’t fully rebuilding.”

How Dalvin Cook would Fit the Minnesota Vikings’ Offense

After letting Cook depart last summer, the Vikings made a wise choice because in his 2023 season with the New York Jets, he only mustered 214 yards and an average of 3.2 yards per rush.

However, Cook could have some upside in a system he is accustomed with alongside an explosive and elusive runner like Jones as a component of a backfield puzzle where he isn’t required to bear the full responsibility.

Cook, who has run for 6,207 yards and 47 touchdowns in his career, could be able to fill Jones’ spot in a limited capacity with quality carries.
