With a permanent Sam Lammers transfer likely, Rangers could suffer financial consequences.

Derek Ferguson doesn’t think selling Sam Lammers this summer will allow the Rangers to recoup their investment. After a challenging half-season in Glasgow, the Dutch forward has found some form while on loan at FC Utretcht since January, leading the former Ibrox midfielder to believe that the forward could be better suited to play in the Eredivisie.

Lammers cost approximately £3.5 million when he moved from Atalanta to the Light Blues a year ago [Daily Record, June 15]. In his 31 appearances, Lammers scored twice for the Light Blues, but in just 14 games, he has scored eight goals for Utrecht. Ferguson therefore believes that even if Rangers have to incur a loss on the sale, it will be in everyone’s best interests for the two parties to come to an agreement that keeps him where he is. “I don’t know about making their money back; he left for a reason, because he wasn’t producing the goods,” he remarked in an exclusive interview with Ibrox News.

To tell the truth, there were moments when he was erratic. He appears to be content where he is at Utrecht, where he has scored a few goals. The question is if an agreement can be reached. Sometimes you go to a club and, for whatever reason, you’ve seen it with guys at various clubs over the years, but it just doesn’t work out for them.

“In my opinion, it would be best for all sides if Lammers went to play football somewhere else. Why not Holland?

That kind of football feels more appropriate for him. When he was at Rangers early in the season, he struggled for extended periods of time. At times, you were expecting he would start to play well and score a few goals, but that didn’t happen.

Philippe Clement to sanction Rangers departure for Sam Lammers?

Rangers obviously do not want to lose money on a difficult half-season with only two goals, but it might be the least bad alternative for Philippe Clement. During his first few months in command of the team, the Belgian stayed with the 26-year-old, but when there was no improvement in his play, he was content to let the struggling Lammers leave one transfer window after joining, just as he did with Jose Cifuentes. Any kind of financial return would be preferred because it doesn’t seem to benefit anyone for an unhappy athlete to be sitting on the bench and not participating.

After a good second half of the campaign, Lammers appears to have established his worth to Utrecht, so a deal to retain him there seems plausible. If not, it might not be surprising to see another Dutch side attempt to land him.
