Brendan Rodgers has a lot of planning ahead of him between now and the end of the season as Celtic get ready for another intense weekend in the title chase. The Scottish champions, Dundee, are up next, and if things go our way this weekend, Celtic might lead the Scottish Premiership by six points by Sunday night.
However, it appears like Rodgers is already planning for the upcoming campaign as the Hoops coach searches for players to bolster the Celtic starting lineup. Additionally, it appears that one player in particular, who Celtic are reportedly interested in, wishes to visit Paradise this summer.
Charles Pickel would choose Celtic over Leeds United. Charles Pickel is a defensive midfielder for Cremonese who competes in the Italian second division. Numerous English Championship clubs are interested in the midfielder with twelve caps for the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but it’s believed that Paradise is his top choice.
According to a Football Scotland report, “Clubs in the English Championship, including Leeds and Preston, are seriously interested in the player’s services.” Although Pickel’s desired destination is Celtic, Football Scotland is unsure if they will express a genuine interest in making a summer transfer.
Would Celtic be better off with Charles Pickel? From the Portuguese side of Famalicao, Pickel joined Cremonese in 2022. Six goals and two assists have been accrued by him during his 63 appearances for the Italian team.
Pickel holds two significant accolades: he won the league with FC Basel in 2016 and 2017, making him a two-time Swiss champion. Given that Pickel, 26, is versatile and has experience playing center defense, right back, and on the wings, Celtic may be interested in him. Pickel, a native of Switzerland, has 21 caps for his country from the u15 to u20 levels. However, he decided to play for the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) after his dual nationality earned him the first of his 12 senior caps with a game-winning assist against Sudan in the 2023 African Cup of Nations. Transfermarkt Pickel helped Cremonese, who were demoted from Serie A the previous season, move up to fourth place in the league, just seven points out of automatic promotion.
At 85.7% accuracy and 60% long ball success, Pickel is among the top passers in Serie B, according to Fotmob. Pickel isn’t exactly lighting the heather on fire, though, from a defensive standpoint. With only 16 interceptions, 73 ball recoveries, 52.5% of duels won, and 60% of tackles made, the defensive midfielder is far worse than his teammates in the same league. Therefore, even though Pickel’s age and experience match those of Celtic, does he have the quality Brendan Rodgers has been searching for, or is he simply an upgrade over the current team?
