Chris Sutton has been cleared by Ofcom following complaints about his commentary during the most recent Rangers vs Celtic match.
When Matt O’Riley chipped his penalty past Jack Butland in the first half of the game, Sutton said that he had “some balls.” However, the TV watchdog overruled Sutton’s comments. On April 7, the game ended in a 3-3 draw, but the Danish midfielder’s “Panenka” penalty put the visitors ahead 2-0. Alongside Ian Crocker and Kenny Miller, Sutton co-commented on the game for Sky Sports.
“What a nerve from Matt O’Riley,” he remarked following O’Riley’s spot kick. Panenka. That takes courage. “Celtic have not got a good record from penalties this season but you’ve got to have some balls to do that in this fixture.” Three complaints concerning his remarks, which he made during the live broadcast of the game, were submitted to the TV regulator. ‘Generally accepted standards’ were allegedly broken, according to the complainants.
After watching the video, Ofcom decided that there was insufficient evidence to support a Broadcasting Code investigation. “A brief remark made during the game’s commentary did not raise issues warranting investigation under our rules,” an Ofcom representative said.
According to reports, the FA Cup final held south of the border will take place the same month as the Scottish Cup final, pitting viewers against one other. On Saturday, May 25, Rangers and Celtic will play in the main event at Hampden to wrap up the Scottish domestic season. The red and blue parts of the city will meet again at Wembley on the same day, with Manchester triumphing over London. Remarkably, the competition’s final will see the two biggest teams from Glasgow square off for the first time since 2002.
For the second year in a row, Manchester United and City will square off in the championship game.
