Leeds United has to capitalize on Southampton’s circumstance; forget about Michy Batshuayi.

Michy Batshuayi or Che Adams, two goal scorers, would have helped Leeds United fight for the top two as they battled for promotion back to the Premier League at the first opportunity. With two games behind second-place Ipswich Town and four points behind leaders Leicester City, the Whites are presently in third position in the Championship. Southampton is in the running, and Leeds is anxiously observing the Saints from fourth place, but the Saints may have too much work ahead of them following their 2-1 loss to Cardiff City on Saturday.

Leeds has scored the fewest goals of the four teams vying for promotion, despite scoring the most goals this season. Daniel Farke’s team lacks a reliable goal scorer. This season, Patrick Bamford, Joel Piroe, Mateo Joseph, and Joe Gelhardt have all struggled to be consistent, either because of subpar play or a lack of playing time. Leeds has reportedly been linked to the veteran Belgian striker Michy Batshuayi of Fenerbahce and the front man Che Adams of Southampton as a result.

Adams and Batshuayi have both been connected to summer moves to Elland Road. Leeds is interested in signing Batshuayi in the summer if they get promoted, as the Belgian forward’s contract expires at the end of the current campaign, according to Turkish publication Aksam. Adams has reportedly piqued the curiosity of Leeds and Wolves, two Premier League teams, according to TEAMtalk. Adams’s contract is also expiring. For various reasons, Leeds should consider signing both Adams and Batshuayi.

Despite merely being a backup player, Batshuayi is having a fantastic season while playing for Turkish powerhouse Fenerbahce. In 22 Super Lig games, he has scored 10 goals, however he has only ever started one since Edin Dzeko is preferred in a one-striker setup. The 30-year-old has played in the Premier League for Chelsea and Crystal Palace in the past, and he has extensive experience around Europe. Adams, on the other hand, has played more of a rotational role for Southampton, starting just 23 league games. Despite leaving the Premier League, Adams has scored 16 goals in the second division.

Adams, a Scotland international with a great deal more English football experience, has demonstrated this season that his physicality and link-up play can be disconcerting for defenders. He is an important component of Southampton’s style of play.

Adams would be a better choice at this time even if Batshuayi and Adams both exhibit unique attributes that make them good potential choices for Leeds to sign. Although Adams doesn’t have a great goal scoring record either, he is still a few years younger than the Belgian, and Batshuayi has not performed to his full potential for Chelsea and Crystal Palace in the Premier League. Adams may also be useful for Leeds to have in case they are relegated at the first time of asking since, given his impressive play in the Championship this season, Batshuayi probably won’t want to stay in the second division of English football.

Adams is probably paid less than Batshuayi, too. According to Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, the latter is paid £58,000 a week in Türkiye, whereas Adams makes about £30,000 a week with the Saints, according to Capology. Even though Adams is the obvious choice if Leeds are promoted to the Premier League, both are excellent alternatives for the Whites.
