3 Dallas’ team positions that could look much different in 2025

The upcoming season may bring about a few significant adjustments for the Cowboys.

Quarterback

The idea that the Cowboys would have a brand-new quarterback room in 2025 may seem absurd, but it is feasible. Cooper Rush and Dak Prescott are in the last year of their contracts, and Dallas has already declared that they would not pick up Trey Lance’s fifth-year option.

The Cowboys’ quarterback room could be entirely depleted by free agency in 2025 because they don’t even have a quarterback on the practice squad. Because you don’t want to derail contract negotiations with Prescott by selecting a quarterback earlier than a late-round pick, this draft presents a challenging dilemma.

However, considering that Lance was basically selected with this year’s fourth-round selection, it’s hard to defend selecting a quarterback at all. Rushing isn’t the solution, so it nearly appears necessary to select a quarterback in the 2024 draft in order to prevent having a rookie starting quarterback in 2025.

Lamb’s one-year contract is stressful enough, but there isn’t much stability behind him in the depth chart either. In the last year of his deal, Brandin Cooks is followed by several developing prospects and Jalen Tolbert, who is still developing. Among such possibilities is Jalen Brooks, who even saw action in 2023, filling in as a mop-up after many Cowboys blowout victories.

Despite not having the same agency, I believe that Prescott and Lamb’s contracts are largely dependent on each other, so if discussions with one go south, it might be a double-edged sword. In preparation for disaster, the Cowboys need to address wide receiver in this draft with an earlier pick than most think is necessary.

Broad Receiver

Star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, like Prescott, is in a contract year after the Cowboys selected his fifth-year option. Lamb’s salary cap impact this season is expected to be slightly over $17 million, but it might be less if the Cowboys could convince him to sign a deal before Jamarr Chase and Justin Jefferson.

Speaking of what could be a shakeup at the quarterback position, Dak Prescott discusses his future with the Cowboys.

“I’m not going to say I fear being here or not. I don’t fear either situation, to be candid with you,” Prescott said Friday from the Children’s Cancer Fund Gala, via The Athletic’s Jon Machota. “I love this game and love to play and love to better myself as a player and my teammates around me. Right now it’s with the Dallas Cowboys, it’s where I want to be, and that’s where I am, and that’s the focus. And after the season we’ll see where we’re at and if the future holds that. And if not, we’ll go from there.”

Prescott, who signed a four-year, $160 million contract in 2021, has one year left on it. Earlier in March, Prescott expressed his “definite confidence” that he and the Cowboys could work out an extension. But during the course of the month, that confidence was called into doubt.

When asked if this season would be Prescott’s last in Dallas, owner Jerry Jones responded, “I don’t fear that.” This was in response to allegations that the team and the quarterback had an understanding that the quarterback’s contract would not be adjusted until the 2024 campaign.

Prescott stated on Friday that he and Jones had discussed the matter and were “aligned” with where things are right now, but they had not yet discussed a contract.

Even though he is trying to focus on getting ready for the upcoming season, he did not completely rule out the prospect of the parties speaking in the future. Prescott remarked, “To be honest, I’m focused on the now.

“In this instance, right now, my concerns are about improving, being better than I am right now. If the negotiations start and actual conversations take place, then we can discuss getting that done. I’m going to leave that up to Jerry and my agency for now.
