This offseason, the Dallas Cowboys hired another veteran running back, which seemed like a strange move given their choice of Ezekiel Elliott. Early in the offseason, rumors circulated that Elliott and the Cowboys had interest in playing together in 2024.
But with just Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn as familiar names at tailback, the Dallas Cowboys are finally looking to an outside player in the form of a free agent. According to Todd Archer, the Houston Texans, the state rivals, will be quite familiar with this free agent.
Even if Royce Freeman isn’t exactly the marquee player that many Cowboys supporters would have preferred, he has experience as a backup or rotational back.
The Cowboys made an intriguing decision in selecting Freeman, as owner Jerry Jones declared the team would be “all-in” throughout the offseason. Derrick Henry was one of the better guys the Cowboys could have acquired to the running back position. The Cowboys, according to Henry, were not interested in signing him this offseason.
Elliott was a player the Cowboys were interested in signing. Freeman’s signing, meanwhile, makes it less likely that the former All-Pro from the Cowboys will sign with Dallas for the next campaign. Elliott would have been a better fit for the Cowboys than Freeman.
Elliott agreed to a one-year contract worth $3 million in base pay with the New England Patriots last year. There was an additional $3 million in incentives up for grabs. The Los Angeles Rams inked Freeman to a $1 million deal last season, according to Spotrac.
It stands to reason that Freeman won’t be earning much more than that this year.
This season, Elliott seems to be being passed over by the Cowboys for a less talented running back. And it appears that the Cowboys’ finances have improved.
