Gary O’Neil acknowledges that he hasn’t been happy with his current position as Wolves’ Matheus Cunha.

On Saturday, Gary O’Neil was pleased to see Matheus Cunha return to the Wolves starting lineup. However, following the draw against Nottingham Forest, he once more acknowledged that he disliked starting him at number nine.

Wanderers and Forest played to a 2-2 draw at the City Ground. It was a hard-fought point away from Nuno Espirito Santo’s team.

Mario Lemina has since named Cunha’s first goal, a fantastic solo effort, the “Goal of the Season.” Cunha scored two goals overall. For the first time since returning from his “severe” hamstring injury that kept him out for less than two months, the Brazilian was starting.

Cunha returned on Saturday, and his presence made a big impact in the game. In prior games, O’Neil had to rely on young players like Leon Chiwome, Nathan Fraser, and Tawanda Chirewa.

Although he was a number nine on the field, Gary O’Neil said that he doesn’t want him there and disclosed the position he’d like to see him return to. Gary O’Neil discusses his current preferred position as Wolves’ Matheus Cunha.

The fact that Cunha is not a pure central striker has long been known.

Although O’Neil has previously stated that he doesn’t use him up top since it doesn’t maximize his skill set, he has played right up top for Wolves multiple times this season.

Cunha’s first goal against Forest on Saturday demonstrated his great ball-carrying abilities. Because of his quickness, close ball control, strength, and great balance, he is very challenging to take down.

Keeping this in mind, O’Neil wants Cunha to resume his position on the left flank, where he was playing just before suffering an injury.

O’Neill stated, via a Wolves official: “He had a great strong run and finish. He doesn’t like playing in the position that we put him in today, and I don’t think that either, but he had to play as a nine today, and it was evident that he drifts a lot and comes down frequently while playing the nine position. “We want to get him back in that left side position, which is where he scored his goal. But we’re happy with the set-play goal because we worked hard for it, Max [Kilman] gave us a clear header at the back, and the coaching staff did a great job to get us that one.

Great from the left side is Cunha. From that left stance, Cunha does appear extremely potent due to the way he blends his speed, strength, and technical skill.

The £60,000-per-week star, who had requested to play as the line-leader, didn’t really show up there much against Forest. However, his goal demonstrated his effectiveness, so it is understandable why O’Neil wants to see him in that role more frequently going forward. Given that Hwang Hee-chan is back in the picture, Cunha should be playing from the left, the South Korean should be playing through the middle, and Pablo Sarabia should be playing from the right. Wolves supporters won’t care too much where Cunha plays at this stage, though, as long as he does. He is now a vital member of the Wanderers team, and his presence on the field significantly raises the threat of a collective goal.
