In the final qualifying match for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, South Africa, the defending African champions, and Nigeria’s Super Falcons, the most successful team on the continent, are set for an incredible confrontation.
At the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on Friday, Nigeria prevailed by the narrowest of margins in the first leg of the two-game playoff match.
The Super Falcons defeated the Banyana Banyana 1-0 and won their first meeting with them in six years thanks to a penalty kick scored by Rasheedat Ajibade in the first half.
Although South Africa would have preferred to have received a spot kick of their own in that match, they ultimately deserved to lose for the first time since losing to Malawi 3–4 in the COSAFA Women’s Cup in October.
But with the victory in Abuja, Nigeria’s record of unbeaten games in 90 minutes was increased to 14.
The Super Falcons will fancy their chances against the South Africans after going toe-to-toe with Australia, Canada, Republic of Ireland, England, and Cameroon during their outstanding run.
Their mission is evident: win in Pretoria and guarantee your place in Paris 2024, according to one of the Super falcons star.
But it’s not an impossible task for South Africa.
They must win by a minimum of 1-0 to send the game into a penalty shootout, and they must win by any margin of two goals to advance to the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024.
