John Hartson has praised Daizen Maeda following his incredible goal for Celtic against Rangers on Sunday.
After James Tavernier mishandled the ball during the first 25 seconds of last weekend’s derby at Ibrox, the Hoops forward scored an incredible goal. Hartson heaped admiration on Maeda for his workrate, which produced the opening goal out of nothing when his attempted clearance cannoned off the Japanese and soared into the net.
While Hartson acknowledged Maeda’s efforts, he also pointed out what Tavernier ought to have done in place of trying to hook the ball away.
The former Parkhead forward also thought he knew why the Gers captain made the decisions he did.
Though he doesn’t have a reputation for scoring goals, the Welshman acknowledged Maeda’s contributions on GO Radio. He’s right; you can’t refute it.
We talk a lot about his enthusiasm, but he’s also intelligent. He has the ability to show defenders where to go and how to get inside to the approaching midfield players. He is incredibly effective at moving up and down the field, and I felt he gave Tavernier a terrible first half of the afternoon. Tavernier was unaware of the day.
Tavernier tries to hook it away with the goal, but if he’s a little more composed, he rolls it back to the goalkeeper.
Maeda has gained so much ground that Tavernier is probably surprised to see him standing there! Probably the one thing Tavernier never does is cast a glance behind him. He attempts to hook it; it takes a little bit of luck, but they used Brendan’s tactics and the high press, and it worked. The Rangers defense committed numerous errors.
