Neil Lennon has criticized Philippe Clement for his assertion of an Old Firm “moral victory. After a huge derby match at Ibrox, in which his team had to come back twice to earn a share of the points in a thrilling six-goal thriller and maintain control over the Scottish Premiership title, the Rangers manager made the statement following the game.
After the thrilling 3-3 tie, Clement gushed over his team’s effort and declared them the “moral winners.” Lennon, however, was not having any of it and stated that in the Old Firm, one must either win or lose. He was disappointed by what he had learned from the Belgian.
He made the following statement on PLZ Soccer: “I was disappointed by several remarks made following yesterday’s game. I disagreed with that.
If you ever earn a moral victory in an Old Firm Derby, I have no idea what that implies. Either you succeed or you fail.”
After the match, Clement had stated, “In the second half, we revealed our true selves.” We displayed what I really wanted to see—a never-say-die team with a great deal of resiliency, hunger, and drive to alter the outcome.
With everything we have demonstrated today, we definitely deserve at least a point. We are moral winners in the end, in my opinion, since this club could not have responded after losing 2-0 to the Old Firm just a few months ago.
It is unclear to me how many teams in the past could have accomplished it. Going into the changing room to try to transform a 2-0 deficit into a point advantage is frustrating for supporters in a crucial game. My boys make me very proud because of that.
