At halftime against Celtic at Ibrox, Rangers manager Philippe Clement must make a crucial decision following a lackluster first forty-five minutes.
In the first 21 seconds of Sunday’s (7 April) Old Firm match, the Gers were behind a goal from Daizen Maeda and looked absolutely stunned.
With the exception of a few bright spots, including a header from Connor Goldson, Rangers were unable to gain any momentum and gave up a second goal through a Matt O’Riley penalty.
Rangers is behind Celtic 2-0 at the half.
The saddest part is that the Gers may have fallen much further behind if Jack Butland hadn’t made some outstanding saves.
Naturally, if Clement wants to prevent the Light Blues’ campaign from collapsing entirely, he must make adjustments on the go.
While the defence hardly covered themselves in glory, the attack was completely disjointed. Clement could easily make multiple changes at the break.
If one player is to be hauled off, though, it should be the ineffective Tom Lawrence, who struggled to get involved in the first 45 minutes.
While it is undeniable that Cyriel Dessers did not have an influence, Lawrence in particular did not assist the striker in any way.
“Tom Lawrence is on the team because of it. He ought to be passing the ball to Dessers so that he can score.
In the first half, Lawrence only had 25 touches with the ball [Sofascore] and just eight of his 13 passes were completed.
It should go without saying that a player on the squad cannot accomplish anything with that level of performance.
Cantwell is the obvious choice to enter the game in the second half, but if Clement wants to make a minor formation change, Abdallah Sima is also an option.
In either case, the Rangers’ hopes of winning the championship will no longer be in their own hands if a substitute is not made at halftime.
