Derrick Henry reiterated that he would have had interest in joining the Dallas Cowboys.
The Dallas Cowboys have signed just one outside free agent thus far in April. We are far into the season. Not to remind you, he’s a linebacker named Eric Kendricks. What’s done is done, but questions still surround the Cowboys’ approach to this time of year. While several free agents have already found homes outside of Dallas, I say this not in a dejected but rather a matter-of-fact manner. Strangely enough, a guy who now considers Dallas to be his physical home has stated multiple times that the Cowboys never bothered to contact him about relocating there for football.
The circumstance probably frustrates you, and you know the name. According to Derrick Henry, it would have been a “perfect situation” to sign with the Dallas Cowboys in free agency. Nearly a month has passed since Derrick Henry joined the Baltimore Ravens, and ever since, NFL fans have been curious about what kind of rushing assault he and Lamar Jackson would create. This season, Dallas will host Baltimore, so we will get a close-up look at everything.
Upon his arrival to the Ravens, Henry was questioned directly if he had received a call from the Cowboys. They didn’t, he pointed out. Following the viral nature of that story, it was revealed that Dallas declined to contact him out of a desire to avoid low-balling him and offending him. Really? Despite having Rico Dowdle back this offseason, the Cowboys have not taken the running back situation seriously. Henry, along with Deuce Vaughn, makes up a group that many believe will be augmented by a draft pick and possibly Ezekiel Elliott or Dalvin Cook (both of whom are coming off of disappointing seasons). For this reason, it is hard to argue that Dallas could have given Henry a closer look.
During his recent appearance on The Pivot, Henry was questioned once more on his interactions—or rather, lack thereof—with the Cowboys during the free agency period. He said how much he would have liked to, but clearly could not, unless they called or made an offer.
Despite the fact that I live in Dallas, which is a great place to be, we are not required to move because we are residents. On the other hand, the history of the Ravens, their passion for the team, Ray Lewis’s influence there, and his conversational style all came into play while discussing the organization. I thought, “Man, I would really love to be a Raven if I’m not in Tennessee or if I don’t get to go to Dallas.” … When questioned if the Cowboys were involved, Henry said, “They ain’t holla at me at all.”
Playing with a star on his helmet would have seemed like a strange experience for Henry. As perfect a site as it could have been, Henry said nothing was ever planned. Ahh… He remarked, “It would have been crazy.” “I had assumed it would be a conversation, outreach, or something else. You know what I mean, they never made an effort? About their organization, I don’t really know a lot. I just know what I hear. I was conversing with my agency. They showed no signs of interest. It is what it is, really. As I previously stated, I will be where I am supposed to be, and Baltimore seemed like the ideal location.
It seems like a mistake not to give Henry meaningful consideration, regardless of whether the Cowboys actually did not call him out of some sort of respect. particularly if he thought the circumstances were ideal. There has been a widespread belief over the past few years that running backs are unimportant. While it is true that investing premium assets in one carries some risk, they do offer value.
Furthermore, in a year where there isn’t a ton of depth at running back in the draft class, the Cowboys are still in a hole at the position and are forced to choose one in a few weeks. Many clubs ahead of the curve in free agency signed running backs in anticipation of this, but whether we agree with their strategy or not, the Cowboys seem confident in it. As previously mentioned, the Cowboys’ approach to free agency has drawn a lot of consideration and feedback. Henry may have hinted at his feelings on our franchise while discussing his new team:
Given the manner in which the Ravens pursued him, Henry has good reason to assume that they are hungry and determined to succeed. Although many of us would argue otherwise, he doesn’t explicitly state that the Cowboys aren’t hungry or motivated, but it’s difficult to refute that since they haven’t even called him.
