Micah Richards has questioned James Tavernier’s motivation for wanting to leave the Rangers in light of the most recent rumors that he may be leaving Ibrox. The former Manchester City defender said that it would be foolish to quit Rangers and that becoming a legend there is worth more than going to the Premier League or even the Championship.
Tavernier had been mentioned in connection with a potential transfer to the Premier League as well as a possible move to Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia to join Steven Gerrard. “That’s where you’re happy, isn’t it?” Richards said in a statement on BBC Monday Night Club. He has, of course, played in England, been on loan at Newcastle, and had a few other stints. I do think that when he frequented these places, he was probably not receiving the affection.
After all, isn’t everything just about emotion? Rangers is a bigger club than Celtic, and if you could be the best player every week while captaining a bigger team, I would rather be at Rangers. Alternatively, you could move to the Premier League, refuse to settle, and possibly even slide to the Championship.
“He is fully aware of what he will receive. A Rangers legend, he is. That’s the subject of our conversation. You can say, “I’m a Rangers legend,” and it has to have some significance when you look back.
Richards is absolutely correct when he asks why he would want to leave Rangers, with everything that it stands for, the love of the fans, and the captaincy, to join a team that might be more financially successful but lacks that sense of community?
Despite his remarkable performances, which have seen him smash records at Ibrox, including his most recent “astonishing” performances, Jeff Stelling said he wouldn’t have the chance to join a Premier League team given his age.
The skipper, who had rather predictably missed a penalty in the first half, was outstanding once more as he helped his club defeat Hibernian 3-1 at Ibrox. A few minutes later, a late dash into the area gave him the lead.
Tavernier will be essential to the Rangers’ success in their upcoming match against Celtic; if they can win all three games, it will put them on track for another SPFL title and further solidify his legend status.
