Gary O’Neil of Wolves may be the ideal candidate to succeed Jurgen Klopp, even though Liverpool may have lost out on Xabi Alonso. In order to temper any unrealistic expectations of winning the Premier League, Troy Deeney of talkSPORT feels the Reds should pick a younger coach as their next hire.
After nine incredibly successful years at Anfield, Klopp unexpectedly revealed in January that he will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the current campaign. Alonso quickly established himself as the clear favorite to succeed him, although he has since declared his loyalty to Bayer Leverkusen. Deeney speculated that O’Neil, the head coach of Wolves, may be the right person to lead Liverpool into the post-Klopp era after hearing the news.
They now have a culture,” he said to Majestic during talkSPORT’s The Final Word. “Earlier, we overheard someone calling Arsenal discussing how the team had not played in seven or eight years.
But because [manager Mikel] Arteta had to construct it, they’re here to stay now. It seems to be there already. All of the individuals you are inheriting are internationals who are accustomed to success. The two went on to show how difficult it was for David Moyes to take over at Manchester United in 2013, the year after he had led the team to Premier League victory, after Sir Alex Ferguson left the team. “I’m going to throw a name at you – I think [Liverpool] need a coach next year more than a manager, so I’m going to say Gary O’Neil.”
O’Neil has taken Wolves to the top half of the Premier League standings and within three points of the European places since taking over in August.
talkSPORT is aware that he is expected to reject a Manchester United deal, and Deeney thinks Liverpool would be a good fit for him despite Wolves wanting to ensure his future.
I believe Liverpool will have a very young team next season, which is why I suggest Gary O’Neil,” he continued.
They might be left with a very youthful group if the rumors about the departure of three or four of the key players are accurate. “I believe that the squad would benefit from having a younger coach who is accustomed to working with younger players and doesn’t have high expectations for them to win the league. We would expect Liverpool to still be in the top four if someone like [Brighton manager Roberto] De Zerbi took over.” Now that Alonso has withdrawn from consideration, Liverpool will likely continue looking for Klopp’s replacement in front of the upcoming campaign.
Julian Nagelsmann, the manager of the German national team, and Ruben Amorim and De Zerbi of Sporting Lisbon are other rumored candidates. If Deeney’s suggestion materializes, though, it would represent the most recent development in O’Neil’s remarkable career as a manager.
