Chris Sutton acknowledges that Celtic cannot afford to lose their Old Firm match at Ibrox against Rangers next weekend.
The top-of-the-table match between the rivals on April 7 could have a significant impact on the outcome of the title this season.
Despite having played one extra game, Celtic leads Rangers by a point following their respective victories on the weekend to resume play. On BBC Radio 5 Live’s 606 phone-in on March 31, Sutton was asked if Celtic enter the match as the underdogs.
The caller was identified as “Frank.” “Frank pointed out that the Rangers have a match coming up, and if they win, the match at Ibrox will be huge,” Sutton remarked. “This isn’t something Celtic can lose, is it?”
The matchup that takes place next weekend is not the decisive match in the race for the crown. There are still many turns and turns to come, including a clash at Parkhead. Still, a Rangers win would put them firmly ahead as the season approaches its conclusion—it has been an interesting one thus far.
Naturally, the contrary is also true: if Celtic wins, they will have to be regarded as the favorites to win the title since it will be in their hands. It’s unclear exactly who a draw would fit.
Rangers will go into the game with the goal of winning it, that much is evident. If Celtic enters the match with the intention of winning, that can very well work to the Gers’ advantage.
This is an opportunity for retaliation following some dismal Old Firm results recently. Less than a week remains till the end of the discussion period.
