Phil Hay addresses Kalvin Phillips in light of the discovery of video from the West Ham incident.

After fresh video of an incident from when Kalvin Philipps was on loan at West Ham United surfaced, Phil Hay commented on the player amid connections to Leeds United.

If the Whites are promoted to the Premier League, reports indicate they might be prepared to invest £30 million to bring the England international back to Elland Road this summer [Sunday Mirror, 31 March].

This information was released after video of the midfield player fighting verbally with a West Ham supporter after the Irons’ loss to Newcastle surfaced.

Athletic writer Hay acknowledged that the footage was “hard to watch,” but he refrained from commenting on any links. “Having seen how happy Phillips was in himself at Leeds, this is quite hard to watch,” he wrote on X on Saturday, March 30.

Phillips’ move to West Ham, like his move to Manchester City, didn’t work out for whatever reason, so when the summer transfer market opens, the midfielder’s career needs something to go right.

Given his recent lackluster performances and the fact that he obviously has no future at Manchester City, it seems unlikely that the Hammers will be eager to sign him permanently.

Perhaps a move to Leeds United would be more agreeable to everyone.

But the Whites do have a lot of talented midfield players already, as Daniel Farke has seen players like Lilia Gruev, Glen Kamara, Ethan Ampadu, and Archie Gray excel in the middle of the pitch.

Leeds might be better off using the money in other parts of the playing group if they are prepared to pay £30 million on a single player this summer.

It remains to be seen whether this change will take place, but it is definitely something to watch. Initially, Farke’s team must secure a spot in the Premier League.
