Ezekiel Elliott and the Cowboys have a “mutual interest” in getting together.

The Cowboys are interested in using a well-known player to fill the void at running back. According to reports, the Dallas Cowboys and free-agent running back Ezekiel Elliott are thinking about getting back together this offseason. Though a deal hasn’t been finalized, Elliott and the Cowboys have “mutual interest,” according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Before agreeing to a one-year contract and playing for the New England Patriots last season, Elliott, 28, spent his first seven NFL seasons in Dallas.

Elliott became one of the greatest running backs in franchise history after being originally chosen by Dallas with the No. 4 overall choice in the 2016 NFL draft out of Ohio State. In 103 regular-season games with the Cowboys, Zeke amassed 8,262 running yards and 68 rushing touchdowns, which rank third on the all-time franchise mark. He was a three-time Pro Bowler and a one-time first-team All-Pro.

Elliott had never finished with fewer than 979 yards of rushes over his first six seasons, but in 2022, he struggled to 876 yards and a career-low 3.8 yards-per-carry average, despite scoring 12 touchdowns. Tony Pollard, on the other hand, rushed for 1,007 yards and nine touchdowns, averaging 5.2 yards per tote. Tony Pollard signed a one-year deal with the Pats to form a potent one-two punch alongside Rhamondre Stevenson.

Elliott led the Patriots in running yards with 642, which was a result of Stevenson missing five games due to injury. Elliott still had three rushing scores and 3.5 yards per carry, which were career lows. But when it came to receiving, Elliott was quite productive, leading New England with 51 receptions, finishing with 313 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns. In his first season as Dallas’ undisputed number one running back in 2023, Pollard was a little underwhelming.
