According to former Leeds United player Jon Newsome, defender Liam Cooper has reached the end of his career and should take responsibility for goals given up.
Even though Ethan Ampadu’s defensive tandem with Joe Rodon appeared to be excellent, Daniel Farke made the unexpected choice to start him in midfield against Watford on Friday night. After sitting on the bench for the previous nine league games in a row as an unutilized replacement, Cooper was in the starting eleven with Rodon.
The Leeds captain, making his first start since January, appeared uneasy and was unable to muster the same kind of defensive consistency that Ampadu had shown in recent months. Although Newsome acknowledges that Ampadu and Rodon make a better defensive duo, he believes Leeds do better when they have them at the back.
He acknowledged Cooper’s lackluster play and emphasized that the 32-year-old Scot is no longer a valuable asset to Leeds. It’s a little bit simple in retrospect, but I have to admit that I believe Liam Cooper has played a few times and been exposed. The former Whites defender stated as much on BBC Radio Leeds. “We look like a much better team with Ethan Ampadu and Joe Rodon at the back. I don’t think he was great for the second goal.”
