Stevie Clifford claims that Rangers forward Cyriel Dessers will be playing in the “last chance saloon” if Philippe Clement’s team starts against Celtic. Since coming to Ibrox in the summer, the Nigerian center forward has caused division, but under the Belgian, he has improved, notching 12 goals and dishing out two more assists to teammates in 26 Premiership games.
Time is running out for Dessers to prove he can be the Gers’ striker in the biggest games, even though Four Lads Had A Dream host Clifford feels the 29-year-old can lead the attack against the Hoops. Speaking on the Rangers Review YouTube channel on March 29, at 14:00, he stated: “I think this is his last chance saloon for him if he does get the nod against Celtic and it doesn’t work out, in the eyes of many supporters who are still kind of holding a torch for him and giving him a wee bit of leeway. It’s a significant moment for many athletes as well as Dessers. But he is capable.
As Clifford pointed out, Dessers has shown that he has what it takes to be a reliable striker in the Premiership under Clement, but all too frequently the Nigerian wastes huge opportunities, particularly in the biggest games of the season. He was hardly involved in any meaningful ball touches against Benfica at Ibrox, and he missed a chance to win the Old Firm derby at Parkhead that could have given the Light Blues all three points.
The 29-year-old has had many opportunities due to injuries to Danilo and Kemar Roofe, but there is not much time left for Dessers to establish himself as the Gers’ starting center back with the summer transfer market rapidly approaching.
If he doesn’t ultimately break through against Brendan Rodgers’ team on Sunday, April 7, at Ibrox, then greater pressure will be applied to the forward from now until the conclusion of the season.
