Terry Rozier has a close relationship with Dwyane Wade; in fact, during the Hall of Famer’s final NBA season, Rozier was able to text the legendary Miami Heat player at four in the morning regarding a jersey switch. The conversation occurred during the 2018–19 NBA season, when Wade was finishing his career with Miami and Rozier was with the Boston Celtics. Rozier was traded to the Heat during this season.
I play basketball because of him, he’s my favorite player, and I molded my game after him,” Rozier remarked. It was only fitting that I should have his jersey.
I texted him two months before we really played him, so that’s probably why. I think that just suddenly occurred to me, but I wanted to make sure we cleared it up before moving on.
It was not too late for me to ask him. However, I’m happy I did and that my goal came true.
Then, far ahead of the teams’ January encounter, Rozier made sure to have a start on his fellow Celtics player, Dwyane Wade, about the jersey switch. This was in his fourth NBA season.
Five years later, Rozier was traded by the Charlotte Hornets to the Heat, and he won over Heat supporters right away by mentioning Wade.
His relationship with the Hornets dates back to his early years of idolizing and copying Wade in Cleveland. Wade retired his renowned No. 3 for Dennis Johnson, so he wore No. 12 when playing for the Celtics. Rozier is wearing Miami’s number two jersey.
“I just remember being in the gym by myself when I was six or seven years old,” Rozier remarked. “I used to intentionally fall as I was shooting the ball and making my way to the hole.
I used to think I was D-Wade all the time and I used to attempt to copy him. Let’s simply fast-forward to the present, when I can wear a Heat uniform and give my all. It feels like a complete circle.
While Rozier was a player for the University of Louisville, the two got to know one another and eventually became friends.
The 30-year-old is exerting every effort to meet Wade’s high expectations and win another NBA title for Miami. Kyle Lowry and a draft pick were exchanged for him in the trade to the Heat.
Rozier has averaged 15.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 5.0 assists in 25 games with Miami. Due to a knee injury in February, he only missed four games. He had a challenging beginning to his Heat career, but this month he has recorded games with 27, 20, and 24 points as they fight to secure their place in the Eastern Conference.
With ten games remaining, Miami’s 39-33 record places it in seventh place in the conference. The team has only won two of its last five games and four of its last eleven. The Heat take on the Portland Trail Blazers at home on Friday night, one game behind the Indiana Pacers for sixth place and a sure postseason berth.
