Stuart McCall says Rangers manager Philippe Clement has done a “outstanding” job at Ibrox.
Although the Belgian has pleased the former Gers midfielder this season, he acknowledges that it is too soon to draw comparisons between him and Ibrox legend Walter Smith.
Michael Beale was replaced by Clement earlier in the season, and he has already won the Scottish League Cup.
McCall told the Daily Record, “Listen, it’s far too early to be drawing comparisons between Philippe and Sir Walter.” However, I firmly believe that he exudes a similar atmosphere and presence on the touchline as the Gaffer did. He would later watch a lot of the games from the director’s box above, but you could always tell when he was coming down the stairs!
“While I don’t know Philippe, I enjoy the way he speaks and conducts himself in interviews. He is undoubtedly attentive and level-headed. From an external perspective, certain similarities may exist; however, we won’t be able to draw comparisons between the two until Philippe has achieved what the gaffer has. However, he’s doing a fantastic job right now.
Earlier in the season, under Beale’s leadership, the Gers were truly hopeless, with the manager unable to motivate his team.
They had a string of poor performances in a number of competitions, and bitter rivals Celtic quickly took a commanding lead in the Scottish Premiership.
The Ibrox chiefs then decided to bring in Clement, which was definitely a gamble but has greatly paid off.
The Belgian has already led his team to success and helped them get to the Europa League’s round of 16 before their painful loss to Benfica.
However, with the Gers still competing against Celtic in the Scottish Premiership and the Scottish Cup, there is obviously a lot on the line at Ibrox.
The Bhoys are currently leading the latter by a point, although Rangers still have a game in hand over their Glasgow rivals. In the former, Edinburgh team Hearts await in the semi-finals.
