Elland Road experience has aided present ambition; discloses “very bitter” disappointment when at Leeds

The defender for Eintracht Frankfurt, Robin Koch, acknowledged that, even if it might have turned out better in the end, losing out on the German team in 2022 while he was at Leeds United was a “very bitter” experience for him.

The center back discussed his goals for the national team going ahead and his career to date with Frankfurter Rundschau.

After eventually making his way back into the starting lineup under Julian Nagelsmann, he is once more included in the national team lineup ahead of this international break.

The 27-year-old returned to the Bundesliga in the summer with the intention of regaining his prominence after being left out of the international picture while playing for Leeds.

He has succeeded in doing so by contributing significantly to Eintracht Frankfurt and getting a call-up for this international break. He recently watched from the sidelines during the 2-0 victory against France, having missed every squad since Euro 2020, when he was also a substitute.

After continuously missing out while at Leeds, it remains to be seen if he can become a permanent component of the group going ahead, but that is undoubtedly the plan.

“I was out for almost the whole first half of the Leeds United season due to a serious injury I sustained,” he stated.

“A positive corona test meant that I had to pass again when I was nominated by Hansi Flick and had already reached Germany. I found that to be really hurtful prior to the 2022 World Cup.

Of course, I continued to grow. This was undoubtedly influenced by the three years spent in the Premier League. There, everything moves a little more quickly.

Anyway. Being a key member of the Eintracht Frankfurt team was always my objective. I performed as expected since it was what was expected of me.

“I work with the national team in the same way here. It is crucial to have a sense of unity as a team, particularly before a major competition like the forthcoming European Championships.

“What matters most is the team. Only when everyone advances in the same direction will it be effective. Success won’t arrive till after that. I’m all set to contribute. It can also matter if you are late to fill in as a substitute. Mario Götze’s 2014 World Cup victory serves as the finest illustration, in my opinion.
