Journalist Phil McNulty of BBC Sport is disappointed that UK Rangers player Jack Butland did not receive a call-up to the England team.
Not only did Butland not make the latest Three Lions team, but he was also left out when Sam Johnstone, the star player for Crystal Palace, had to withdraw due to injury.
James Trafford, the goalkeeper for Burnley, has been promoted from the Under-21 team by England boss Gareth Southgate.
James Trafford’s call-up, who has struggled at Burnley this season, shows the current lack of alternatives,” McNulty stated in a BBC Sport Q&A. “Sam Johnstone of Crystal Palace pulled out of the current squad with an elbow injury, and Nick Pope of Newcastle is out with a long-term injury.”
“It surprised me that Trafford was chosen over Jack Butland, who has been playing for Rangers this season and has represented England in the past.
Jack Butland, a standout for Rangers, will be upset over England’s rejection.
Considering his performances both at home and in Europe while wearing a Rangers shirt, it seems highly probable that Butland would rejoin the England team this month.
Although Jordan Pickford of Everton is Southgate’s undisputed number one, Butland would have made a fantastic backup.
Instead, for the friendly matches against Brazil and Belgium, the management chose to start Aaron Ramsdale of Arsenal and Johnstone of Crystal Palace alongside Pickford.
Since then, Johnstone has departed the team, and considering how little time Ramsdale has played for Arsenal this year, it is undoubtedly questionable why he was included.
On the other hand, Butland has excelled under Philippe Clement, assisting the Gers in pushing their bitter rivals Celtic in the league and making it to the Europa League quarterfinals.
Despite his disappointment at not being selected for the England team, the goalie may still be able to play at Euro 2024 this summer.
