After winning the Championship the previous year while sporting the characteristic facial hair on his upper lip, Leeds United defender Connor Roberts, who is currently on loan, feels the “power of the ‘tache” can propel Leeds and Wales to victory this season.
Carrying a preened moustache, Roberts has been likened to actors in period dramas and former RAF fighter pilots. The 28-year-old admits it’s all a bit of a joke, but he hopes to repeat last year’s Burnley success with the national team and Leeds in the last six weeks of this season.
“My wife said, ‘Why don’t you grow it?’ so I did, and we went on an unbeaten streak at Burnley the previous year.
“This year, I’ve asked her repeatedly if I should shave it off, but she says it looks good, so I’m leaving it that way.
Before tomorrow night’s crucial match against Poland at Cardiff City Stadium, Roberts told reporters in the Wales camp, “I think it has played about 25 Championship games and never lost, so I hope that continues in the Championship and maybe it gives us a bit of luck on Tuesday.”
In their attempt to secure a spot at this summer’s UEFA Euro 2024 in Germany, Wales is just 90 minutes and one victory away from making their third consecutive appearance at a major event. The team that defeated clubmate Glen Kamara’s Finland 4-1 last Thursday advanced to face Poland in the final on Tuesday night. The outcome of this match will determine who will play with the Netherlands, Austria, and France in Group D at the tournament in June.
I have had the good fortune to play in some major games for Wales. Another is scheduled for Tuesday night,” he stated.
“Life and football are about moments, and Tuesday is just another moment—a chance to accomplish a goal and create memories. As a squad and a nation, it is what we will strive to accomplish. With any luck, we can all work together to achieve it.
“It’s the power of the ‘tache, isn’t it?” Roberts mentioned.
