According to reports, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur may compete for Nottingham Forest forward Morgan Gibbs-White’s services this summer.
Despite the Tricky Trees’ poor record, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers player has been a bright spot, contributing directly to nine goals in 33 appearances across all competitions.
In 28 Premier League games, where he has worn the captain’s armband seven times, Gibbs-White has scored four goals and assisted five others in 2023–2024. He has also scored three goals and provided five assists.
After two years in the top flight, Nuno Espirito Santo’s team is currently headed for a demotion back down to the Championship after receiving a four-point punishment for breaking financial standards.
With nine games remaining, the Tricky Trees are now one point below Luton Town in the league. A possible demotion could cause a huge exodus of players from the City Ground.
A number of prominent teams may be interested in signing Gibbs-White this summer; his sale would help Nottingham Forest balance the books. Gibbs-White is under contract with the club until 2027.
The Daily Star claims that Arsenal is keeping a close eye on the situation and that Forest is seriously considering cutting their connection with the 24-year-old this summer for a sizable cash.
According to the article, Mikel Arteta believes Gibbs-White may be Emile Smith Rowe’s replacement. Since Rowe is still having trouble playing regularly in North London, Arsenal is anticipated to consider bids for him this summer.
Ever since his 10-goal Premier League season in 2021–2022, Smith Rowe’s career has been wrecked by injuries. Due to his health issues and selection troubles, he hasn’t featured for the senior England team since March 2022.
Arsenal supporters still firmly believe that the 23-year-old Hale End graduate will play another season, but there is no indication that he would extend his contract, thus an exit this summer or soon after is expected.
For Arsenal, Smith Rowe is frequently used on the left flank or in an advanced midfield area—positions that the adaptable Gibbs-White can also play—as well as a right wing or center striker.
Though Tottenham and West Ham United are rumored to be keeping an eye on the England Under-21 international ahead of the summer transfer window, the Gunners are not the only London team vying for his services.
If Forest drops to the Championship for 2024–25, lowball offers will probably test their willpower, but a sum of £50m might be needed to entice Gibbs-White away from the City Ground.
With ten games remaining in the Premier League, Arsenal leads Manchester City by one point and leads Liverpool by goal differential, while Forest is mired in a relegation struggle.
The Gunners will play the defending champions at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. According to reports, Arteta hopes to welcome back two injured players following their withdrawal from international duty.
