This time of year, NFL free agency seems to take forever, yet it has been almost two full weeks already. Jackson Powers-Johnson, who has recently attracted a lot of attention from the Cowboys, is the new, unquestionable starter at center for the Cowboys in this first mock. Texas running back Jonathan Brooks, a unique player for the Longhorns who suffered an ACL tear in November, comes in after that selection. However, Brooks should be primed for action come rookie season, and the Cowboys are allegedly quite intrigued in him.
Patrick Paul, who spent the previous three seasons as a starting left tackle for the Houston Cougars, comes next. The Cowboys add 360-pound T’Vondre Sweat to their defensive line in the second round, giving them plenty of size between Sweat and Mazi Smith.
The Cowboys select a fresh running back in the third round with whom to build their offense. At Florida State, Trey Benson was a playmaker extraordinaire. Even though he still needs to polish a few elements, Benson has the potential to take the lead in 2024 in what will probably be a committee. Tanor Bortolini, who dazzled at the NFL Combine, is the center the Cowboys select in the fifth round. Although he isn’t a lock to start on Day 1, Bortolini can compete well with Brock Hoffman and has exceptional athleticism.
Joshua Cephus, a large, powerful receiver who improved each season at UTSA, is selected by the Cowboys with their final three picks in this mock draft, along with Curtis Jacobs and Eyabi Okie-Anoma. Jacobs is an undeveloped but extremely athletic linebacker who might fit right into Zimmer’s system as a situational player, while Okie-Anoma was unquestionably one of the finest edge defenders in the country last season in terms of stopping the run.
This time around, the Cowboys look somewhere other than the offensive line in the first round. At 355 pounds, Evan Anderson offers plenty of beef for the Cowboys, but his role would be strictly limited to running downs. Finally, the Cowboys double dip at running back with Carson Steele, a prototypical power back whose furious play style would pair well with Tracy.
