Dermot Desmond made an appearance at a Celtic Foundation function in New York yesterday night.
The businessman is the largest individual stakeholder of Celtic, but he has been mostly involved from a distance and hasn’t attended an AGM in almost ten years.
Desmond was acknowledged for initiating the process of bringing back Brendan Rodgers to take Ange Postecoglou’s position. The current Celtic manager was interviewed live during the event last night.
Desmond was initially brought in as an investor by Fergus McCann in 1995. When McCann sold his shares, Desmond increased his ownership in the club, but he has always favored to monitor events from a distance.
Media appearances are also extremely uncommon. In September 2020, he stated to The Athletic that the team was superior to the one that competed in the 2003 UEFA Cup Final in Seville, under Neil Lennon. Celtic went on to lose the SPFL championship for the first time in ten years, as well as to not advance to the semifinals of either cup competition.
Fans are still awaiting word on the club’s summer plans despite the recent announcement of Mark Lawwell’s departure as Head of Recruitment. Rodgers is obviously trying to raise the caliber of the team.
Desmond to The Athletic:
Europe is crucial as a benchmark for our advancement in football. Athletically speaking, I firmly believe that the current Celtic squad is as strong as it has been in the last 25 years—and that’s without a player of the caliber of Henrik Larsson. I would answer “yes” if you asked me if the Celtic team of today would defeat the one that advanced to the 2003 UEFA Cup final in Seville.
