Cowboys After Recording a 40-Yard Dash Time, Projected to Draft a 17-TD Wide Receiver

Following Michael Gallup’s departure, the Dallas Cowboys are now in need of a wide receiver. Their next wide receiver may be selected in the 2024 NFL draft. Dallas is predicted to choose the new receiver with their first pick in a fresh mock draft.

“To give Dak Prescott the best possible downfield target to complement Brandin Cooks and CeeDee Lamb, Thomas and 2022 third-round pick Jalen Tolbert will compete for the starting job left open by Michael Gallup’s release,” Reuter wrote.

On March 22, NFL.com’s Chad Reuter unveiled a four-round mock draft in which, against popular belief, the Cowboys selected LSU product Brian Thomas Jr. at the No. 24 pick. Although Reuter believes Dallas will acquire Thomas as competition for the No. 2 wide receiver position, the majority of mock drafts have Dallas selecting an offensive tackle.

There were many chances for everyone who followed LSU last year to witness Thomas’s brilliance. Although Malik Nabers is anticipated to be selected much earlier in the first round, Thomas posed the greatest endzone threat for the team.

Thomas would be a bold acquisition if the Cowboys choose to select a wide receiver early in the draft.

As autumn approached, Thomas had a lot to prove. During his first two seasons in Baton Rouge, he was quite quiet. However, everything for Thomas and the Tigers changed with the arrival of quarterback Jayden Daniels.

With 1177 receiving yards, Thomas averaged 17.3 yards per reception, according to Sports Reference. Last season, he topped all FBS college football wide receivers with 17 touchdowns for LSU.

His lightning-fast speed is one of the reasons he developed into such a big-play danger for the Tigers. In the NFL Combine, Thomas’s 40-yard sprint time was 4.33. At the professional level, that is a risky mix given that he is also 6’3″.

Lance Zierlein of NFL.com also notes that he is a “ball-tracker.” Thomas has a talent for catching balls that come over his shoulder and never gets lost on deep routes.

With expertise working both indoors and outside, Zierlein stated, “presents an appealing combination of size, length, and speed.” “Thomas could be relied upon as an NFL team’s designated deep guy early in his career as he rarely has problems generating separation deep.”

The conclusion to Michael Gallup’s time in Dallas was disappointing to say the least. After a breakout second season in 2019, Gallup has either been injured or below that standard in almost every season since.

So it made plenty of sense when the Cowboys released Gallup this offseason. But now, he may be preparing to sign with a new team in the Baltimore Ravens. According to ESPN reporter Adam Schefter, Gallup had a visit with Baltimore on March 21.

Perhaps a move to a new location can spark Gallup’s career again. Despite this, supporters of the Cowboys will argue that he has had numerous opportunities to discover the magic of 2019, but to no avail. Gallup hasn’t finished a campaign with more than 500 yards any of the last three seasons.
