Willy Gnonto’s contract with Leeds United appears to be finalized, as per HITC reporter Graeme Bailey. In an interview with Leeds United News on March 20, Bailey stated that the Elland Road administration and the 20-year-old forward have “virtually agreed” on a contract.
Although Gnonto’s current contract doesn’t expire until the end of the 2026–2027 campaign, Leeds has acted to lock down the excellent Italian international to new terms before any potential interest in the summer transfer window.
Yes, I was assured that it was close. We had essentially agreed on terms with him. Leeds didn’t believe he was going anywhere at the time. In the summer, I believe they will just sit down and reevaluate. Bailey told Leeds United News, “It’s all well and good to agree terms with the reps and things, but the player has to sign it as well.
“I think Leeds will be back in the Premier League with him now that he is looking much happier under Daniel Farke and where Leeds are going. He is good friends with Summerville, so there is every chance if you go up he signs a new deal.”
It appears from all the indications that Gnonto is here to stay this year.
The Italian appears to have grown significantly after making an attempt to force his way out of Elland Road to join a Premier League team the previous summer.
Though the striker still has a lot of work ahead of him, Daniel Farke will undoubtedly have been a major factor in Gnonto’s comeback at Elland Road.
His record of seven Championship goals in thirty appearances is a little disappointing, given how well Leeds has performed this season.
Although he has started most of his games as a substitute, the majority of his goals have come in the previous month or two, as he has scored six goals in the league since the beginning of February.
He may have a chance to be included in the Italy squad for Euro 2024 if he can continue to play well, remain in the starting lineup, and assist Leeds in returning to automation promotion.
After that, he ought to start every game for Leeds in the Premier League.
