21st March: Celtic On This Day – David Potter’s Celtic Diary

David Potter, a Celtic historian, recaps significant Celtic matches and occasions every morning on The Celtic Star, beginning on March 21, 1891.

21st March, a Saturday, 1891 At Old Celtic Park, Celtic and Rangers play their first-ever Scottish League match; the match would not be referred to as “Old Firm” for ten years. Johnny Campbell scores the goal for Celtic in a 1-1 draw. It “was the most important game to be played for some time,” according to the Glasgow Herald. The Glasgow Herald maintains that the score was 1-1, despite claims to the contrary from other sources.

21st March, a Saturday, 1908 The Scottish Cup semi-final at Pittodrie, which was attended by the highest number of spectators ever, saw Aberdeen defeated by a late goal from Jimmy McMenemy. Until 1912, semi-finals were not held at neutral locations. The black and golds of Aberdeen, according to the Aberdeen Press and Journal, were unlucky to lose (but then they would, wouldn’t they?). but even so, he is in awe of the powerful Celtic and the large audience they are able to draw. They drew a large crowd from the neighborhood, including “clergymen and women with perfumes,” who could now tell everyone that they had seen the legendary Jimmy Quinn, aside from two special trains from Glasgow.

SATURDAY, 21 MARCH 1925: Celtic defeated Rangers 5-0 in the Scottish Cup semi-final, making it one of their most memorable days. In a success that is as thorough as it is unexpected, a crowd of 101,714 witnesses two goals each from Jimmy McGrory and Adam McLean, and one goal from Alec Thomson. For many years to come, music will be used to remember this game.

SATURDAY, 21 MARCH 1936: Celtic defeats Dundee 2-0 at Dens Park, moving one step closer to the League Championship thanks to goals from Delaney and McGrory, dubbed “Jeemie and Jeemie.” Although the performance was not outstanding, the outcome in front of a sizable Celtic fan base that clearly outnumbered the local fans was appropriate.

SATURDAY, March 21, 2004 A Celtic team that is obviously riding high waves sweeps aside Hibs tonight, defeating the Edinburgh team 4-0 thanks to two goals apiece from Didier Agathe and Henrik Larsson.
