A Rangers player has raised concerns over his place in the squad for EURO 2024, making his national team manager anxious about his fitness for the impending international break.
Rangers players departing for overseas deployment
This March, six members of the Rangers team will be traveling abroad for international duty: Leon King has been called up to play for Scotland’s U21 team, while Rabbi Matondo (Wales), Ross McCausland (Northern Ireland), John Souttar (Scotland), Cryriel Dessers (Nigeria), and Mohamed Diomande (Ghana) will represent their senior sides.
With the knowledge that if they win their upcoming match against Dundee, they will move back above Celtic into first place, and that they must also welcome their bitter rivals to Ibrox before the campaign ends, Gers boss Philippe Clement will have most of his squad at Ibrox as he looks to continue his push for the Scottish Premiership title.
One man who hasn’t left is frequent absentee Ryan Jack, who has been sidelined for much of the season due to injury and is still having fitness issues.
Ryan Jack decision made
In spite of these issues, Steve Clarke has chosen to consider him for the Scotland team this summer, if he can demonstrate his fitness prior to the squad’s announcement. This might be excellent news for supporters of the Green Bay Packers who are hoping to see him return before the domestic season ends.
The 32-year-old has only made 11 appearances in the Scottish Premiership this season. Although he came off the bench in their most recent game—a 2-1 loss to Motherwell—he has only played 13 minutes since the start of February.
Clement, the manager of Rangers, has also been reticent about his circumstances. Prior to his team’s match against Hibs, Clement gave the following explanation: “We lost Ryan Jack for a brief period of time. We had to rearrange our plans because he had a minor injury during the flight to Lisbon, which is really disappointing because I had intended to begin working with him today.”
However, that hasn’t altered Clarke’s position. The Scottish Daily Mail claims that Jack will have the opportunity to “prove his fitness” for the Scotland manager, but Clarke would expect “honesty and transparency” from his midfield player in return.
Despite missing the forthcoming friendlies against the Netherlands and Northern Ireland, the midfield player hopes to return to full fitness following the international break and hopes to stay that way going into EURO 2024 this summer. He has a “excellent chance” of staying in the Scotland team for the tournament if he can “prove his fitness, his ability, and whether he can play consistent minutes,” which suggests he should be involved in the championship run-in.
His Rangers contract expires at the conclusion of the season, and there is currently no new deal in the works, so it is unknown what will happen to him after this summer. His entire attention will be on traveling to the EUROs with Scotland in three months, though, for the time being.
