James Sands discusses his fight for US recognition after Rangers realities

James Sands was a harsh critic of the Scottish Premiership after his disastrous loan stint at Rangers ended suddenly.

Due to his inability to establish a consistent spot in Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s starting lineup, Sands, 23, had his contract terminated six months early in January 2023, allowing him to rejoin his parent team, New York City FC. Additionally, he stated at the time that he was eager to return to the Major League Soccer because it would present a “better” challenge than the Scottish Premier League.

Fourteen months later, Sands is not included in Gregg Berhalter’s USA roster for this Thursday’s CONCACAF Nations League semifinal matchup against Jamaica. Additionally, the 13-time international defender thinks that his teammates’ participation in Europe.

“A lot of time with a national team, it’s just not something you can control day to day,” Sands told the Daily Mail.

“I can’t be calling him every day. He’s not watching me in training every day. So you find a way to sort of put it in the back of your mind and focus on how you’re playing with your club team.
“I constantly strive to be called up to the national team, but I now realize that the majority of those players play in Europe. Therefore, it is challenging to play in the MLS.”

For the national team, the coach will always have the last say in matters. And like me, he will always give a little extra weight to the players competing in the major European leagues. That is the nature of the world.

“All I can do is put in good performances here and hopefully they notice.”
