After defeating Millwall 2-0 at home in the last game before the international break, Leeds United shot to the top of the Championship for the first time this season.
After Leeds United took the top spot, Gary Lineker worries that his beloved Leicester City may not get promoted to the Premier League. Following their victory at Elland Road yesterday against Millwall, Daniel Farke’s team surpassed the Foxes in the standings.
Wilfried Gnonto’s spectacular goal put the Whites ahead. Dan James scored a late goal from close range to ensure Farke’s squad went into the international break leading the league. The Lions put on a tenacious performance and made United fight hard to get maximum points.
While the Foxes were off from league play over the weekend, Enzo Maresca’s squad lost 4-2 to Chelsea in their FA Cup quarterfinal. They had reversed the score four times in the last seven games in all competition.
But if Leicester wins their remaining match against United, they can take the top spot back. Presenter of Match of the Day, however, Lineker, is concerned that the Foxes might not finish in the top two. As the season approaches its business end, the top three are separated by just one point.
Lineker stated: “It’s the hope that kills you” in a recent episode of The Rest Is Football. You simply believe that something must occur eventually. In actuality, Leeds’ victory over Millwall means that Leicester is no longer atop the league.
“I declared prior to the game that I would choose an FA Cup victory over promotion, a trophy over returning to the Premier League, since we would win a lot more games the following season. I’m afraid we won’t get either now.
