Leeds United easily defeated Millwall at Elland Road on Sunday, moving them to the top of the Championship standings. Leeds now has 12 victories in their previous 13 league games, and with eight games remaining, they are well-positioned to continue winning and earn promotion back to the Premier League.
With a week and a half to go before the Whites’ next game, which is at Vicarage Road on Good Friday against Watford, Daniel Farke will be getting ready for one last push for promotion while a large portion of his team is away on international duty. In light of that, let’s take a look at some of today evening’s top stories.
Leeds United still has a long way to go before they get promoted to the Premier League this season, but should things pick up, prospective summer transfer targets are already beginning to be connected to Elland Road. Sean Longstaff of Newcastle United is the most recent name to be connected to a move to West Yorkshire, according to the Sunday Mirror, who claims Leeds has identified him as a possible summer transfer target.
Longstaff’s contract at St. James’ Park expires at the end of the following season, so if a new deal cannot be struck, he may be available this summer. Of course, any deal for Longstaff is only likely to happen if Leeds are a top division side. For Newcastle under Eddie Howe, the 26-year-old has been a vital player, and a figure of £15 million is being discussed.
The center-midfielder has made 172 appearances overall for the team from his birthplace, scoring 14 goals and providing 11 assists.
According to rumors in Spain, Marc Roca and Real Betis are reportedly working on a permanent deal, although there appears to be more work to be done. Roca chose to leave Leeds after their Premier League relegation, and he has been on loan at Betis since the beginning of the season.
By all accounts, he has made an impression in Andalusia, and according to Estadio Deportivo, both Betis and Roca are eager to make the move permanent come summertime. Any deal, though, comes with conditions, the primary one being that Betis have to make it to Europe in order to be able to finance the €12 million that will be required to get Roca through the door.
In the event that Betis is unable to obtain the financial boost that accompanies participation in a UEFA competition, both parties would need to exert effort in order to render Roca a financially viable choice.
