Celtic fans will be surprised by Wyness’s transfer revelation of Peter Lawwell.

Despite criticism from supporters regarding transfer spending, former Aberdeen manager Keith Wyness has maintained that chairman Peter Lawwell and his Celtic board had made “the right thing long-term” decisions.

Speaking on the most recent episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old insisted Lawwell is a “canny operator” after working with him numerous times throughout his career. He held executive positions at Aberdeen from 2000 to 2004, as well as long periods as the head of Everton and Aston Villa. Currently, he runs a football consultancy that provides advice to elite clubs.

Despite the club’s 2022–23 financial statements showing £40 million in profit and £67 million in cash reserves, Celtic’s lone permanent acquisition in January was winger Nicolas Kuhn, who cost £3 million.

Rangers is putting pressure on the Hoops in the Scottish Premiership title race as well; in recent weeks, the Old Firm opponents have pulled two points ahead of the Hoops.

Wyness claims that Peter Lawwell has “done the right thing for Celtic.”

In February, Football Insider reported on the extreme dissatisfaction among fans on social media on the lack of expenditure. Chris Sutton, a former Celtic forward, also criticized Lawwell’s remarks regarding the matter.

“I know Peter, I’ve dealt with him many times on player transfers and I’ve observed how he’s run Celtic,” Wyness said on Football Insider’s Insider Track podcast.

They are incredibly astute businesspeople, and I believe they have made the best decision for Celtic in the long run.

“Having the resources on hand is usually beneficial in the event that a major adjustment is necessary and a new manager is appointed. To have the privilege is wonderful.

At the moment, they made a decision and believed they had invested enough to achieve success. Though it is simple to claim in retrospect that it hasn’t turned out to be the case.

Everything in football is 50/50. It’s a given that half of the fan base will find fault with the decision, and the other half will support it.

We just need to keep an eye on this space to see this fantastic soap drama unfold as the season is not yet over.
