Despite playing for Rangers and being in excellent form, the goalkeeper has not represented England since 2018.
Jack Butland, the goalkeeper for Rangers, has expressed his intention to “keep knocking on the door” after his dreams of making an England return later this month were dashed.
Though he was last called up in 2019, Butland has nine caps and was predicted to play for Gareth Southgate’s team against Belgium and Brazil.
Aaron Ramsdale and Sam Johnstone will back established number one Jordan Pickford in those matches, but Butland isn’t giving up on a late push for this summer’s European Championship.
After the Gers’ close Europa League loss to Benfica, the 31-year-old, who filled in for Pickford at the 2018 World Cup, responded to his exclusion.
Butland responded to a question from TNT Sport regarding potential call-ups by saying, “No, no discussions.” However, if your name appears, that means you’re doing something correctly.
After learning that I wasn’t in the squad, things returned to normal, and I tried to carry out my duties here. I’ve only been in those debates because of my performance, which is the only reason I’ve been there in the first place.
Could I? Must I? It’s not that important. I’ve put in enough effort and completed enough tasks. There are three outstanding goalkeepers in contention, regardless of the outcome. I will simply continue to knock on the door to observe what transpires.
