Kalvin Phillips, a former Leeds United midfielder, is expected to be left out of Gareth Southgate’s England team for this month’s Wembley friendly. Later this month, the Three Lions are scheduled to host Brazil and Belgium at the national stadium. This afternoon, Southgate will reveal the men he has chosen.
Of course, Southgate’s final opportunity to view players up close before announcing his final team list will come soon, as the European Championships this summer draw near. As a result, according to the Athletic, Phillips will be devastated to find himself left off the list.
The midfielder, who doesn’t play much for Manchester City, was part of England’s final team back in November. Even though he has played more minutes since being on loan to West Ham United in January, it appears that Southgate is exploring other possibilities due to his performance for the Hammers.
To be honest, Phillips’s stay in east London hasn’t been great thus far. The midfield player was issued a red card during an away game against Nottingham Forest last month after making mistakes that resulted in goals in his first two appearances for the team.
David Moyes, the manager of the 26-year-old, publicly expressed his opinion that Phillips had made progress and supported the player when he returned to the team earlier this month. Even yet, Moyes saw Phillips struggle in the middle of midfield during their most recent Premier League match against Burnley, and at halftime, he hooked him.
Though he still has time to convince Southgate otherwise, he obviously has work to do. One of his motivations for moving from City to West Ham was to maintain his chances of competing at the tournament this summer. Since making his national debut in 2020, Phillips has earned 31 caps for England, and he was a vital member of the team that advanced to the Euro 2020 final three years prior. In the 7-0 victory over North Macedonia in June of last year, he scored his nation’s lone goal.
