Cowboys Make Their First Significant Free Agency Play By Taking 49ers Priority Free Agent Away

The Dallas Cowboys’ lackluster free agency debut has many supporters unhappy. Of course, one could interpret “quiet” and “patient” in two quite different ways. And which of those best characterizes how they’ve handled the past few days will be determined in large part by the signings they actually make.

The Cowboys made an unexpected move on Wednesday night when they signed former Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Eric Kendricks. This was the first of hopefully many successful moves to come.

Given that news had previously circulated that Kendricks was finalizing a contract with the San Francisco 49ers, this decision is all the more stunning. However, it appears like Dallas was able to snag him from the other NFC contender.

When they were both Minnesota Vikings, Kendricks played for new Cowboys defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, so their reunion made perfect sense.

The Cowboys’ strategy of playing safeties at linebacker infuriated Zimmer, and he made it plain that he intended to add bulk up front. It was going to be a linebacker signing, and this would have definitely been influenced by the previous relationship with Kendricks.

But Zimmer’s helping out an old friend isn’t the only reason for this. In free agency, Kendricks was among the top linebackers accessible.

After nine years of experience and 127 starts, Kendricks was named to the first team of the All-Pro team in 2019. It’s also not like he’s totally washed up at 32 or something.

The Cowboys firmly establish themselves as the NFC East favorites, leading the Philadelphia Eagles on all major betting markets, following their first major transaction of the offseason.
