Wolves target is currently for sale, so Gary O’Neil needs to resist temptation.

The former transfer target Boulaye Dia will be available for a reduced price in the summer, which might provide Wolves a lift. But is he the ideal guy for Gary O’Neil’s team?

Wolves were rumored to have made a desperate attempt to recruit Boulaye Dia, a striker for Salernitana, toward the end of the summer transfer season in 2023.

The Premier League team’s late interest in the player that the Serie A team had permanently signed earlier that summer infuriated them. The Old Gold’s effort to sign the 27-year-old was turned down.

After a falling out with the coaching staff, it has now been stated that Dia’s availability has changed and that he is unlikely to play for Salernitana again this season.

The striker’s career in Italy is reportedly in risk since he declined to enter the game as a substitute last month, which may catch Wolves’ attention before the transfer market opens.

The Serie A club is willing to let Dia go in the summer because of the gulf that has developed between the player and coach this season, according to reports from the Italian publication Tutto Salernitana.

At the conclusion of the 2023–24 season, the forward is rumored to “be sold,” with the club presumably not expecting to get as high of a price as their €30m (£27m) asking from the previous season.

Wolves might strike a deal if they try to close a trade in that range, as the report suggests that it could be “hard” to even recoup the €13 million (£11 million) they spent Villarreal for him in the summer.

There’s no doubting that Dia can lead a line; in the past, journalist Jonas Adnan Giaever praised her as a “absolute monster.”

After an exciting season in Serie A in 2022–2023—during which he scored 16 goals and provided six assists in 33 appearances—the 27-year-old attracted the attention of Wolves.

Things haven’t been as effective for Dia this season, even if it doesn’t take much to see that the Senegal international fits the type of player Gary O’Neil could want to add to his squad in the summer based only on his goal-scoring prowess.

The forward has not only lost favour with Salernitana due to his conduct, but he has also shown to be an unreliable source in the closing third.

The Wolves target has only scored four goals in his 17 Serie A outings, so O’Neil would have some options if the Old Gold were to reenter the market for the player.

Wolves need a striker, but they don’t need one who can’t be counted on to provide a threat up front.

According to Sofascore, Dia scores once every 286 minutes in Serie A compared to Silva’s 212 minutes in the Scottish Premiership, which puts the Midlands club’s choices into perspective. Silva is a loanee from the Championship.

It would be illogical for the team to then bring a player who is producing at a comparable level given that the Portuguese Wolves loanee was sent out because he was not considered part of O’Neil’s long-term plans.

It remains to be seen if the Old Gold will choose to sign the Senegalese striker in the summer, since his future at Salernitana is uncertain.
