As the 22-year-old loanee is once again benched, Leeds United’s chances of getting rid of him are dwindling.

Several players from Leeds United are now on loan in different European leagues.

The Whites will have a busy summer discussing player departures, as many of them have already been judged by the club to be surplus to needs.

Many of the young players who were also sent out on loan don’t feel like they have a great chance of breaking into the Leeds first team from the previous campaign, and it is unlikely that they will be given a path back to Elland Road.

Towards the end of his season-long loan at Middlesbrough, Sam Greenwood is one player who fits that description.

Though Boro’s current lack of participation under Michael Carrick makes a permanent relocation seem implausible, they do have an option to buy in the Greenwood agreement.

Following a very bad run of play in January and February, Greenwood has been named on the bench in five of Boro’s past six games.

The past several weeks have seen Boro truly turn things around, winning four of the six games in which Greenwood has been left out. Greenwood was the starting player in one of their two losses.

The 22-year-old had started some games up front for Leeds’ U21 team and had a great start to his time at Boro, scoring five goals before the start of the New Year. However, he has not scored since.

Although it may not seem like much, Boro’s option to purchase Greenwood for about £1.5 million is significant from the standpoint of an established Championship team without parachute payments.

In November, Kieran Scott, the head of football at Boro, acknowledged that Leeds’ elevation would also make the transaction much more challenging. The Whites have a very good chance of finishing in second place as they are now seated.

In light of this, Leeds might need to search elsewhere once more in order to remove Greenwood from the books permanently.
