Any hope the Rangers had to provide backup is eliminated by Ryan Gauld. Philippe Clement phones

Rangers-related Ryan Gauld has dismissed rumors that he would play football again in Scotland, saying the sport “doesn’t really suit me.”

Throughout his career, Rangers have been connected to the now 28-year-old attacking midfield player, who was once dubbed Scotland’s answer to Lionel Messi.

Although Rangers haven’t been discussed since 2021, many fans still wonder because of their longstanding ties to the former Dundee United and Sporting Lisbon players.

However, based on the small Vancouver Whitecaps winger’s most recent remarks, a move to Scotland seems unlikely. At least for the time being.

After agreeing to a new deal with the MLS team, Ryan Gauld, the captain of the Whitecaps, extended his stay in Canada until 2027. He was chatting with BBC Sport.

Having spent a brief stint in Scotland with Hibs in 2019 – amid those links to Ibrox at the time – Ryan Gauld has claimed it serves as evidence the Scottish game doesn’t suit his style.

In interesting comments, we all know the quiet part of what Ryan Gauld is trying to say about Scotland’s overtly physical style.

“I think what that little Hibs experience told me was that Scottish football doesn’t really suit me,” said Gauld. “I struggled to get involved, struggled to make an impact there.

One can never predict the future or what possibilities are available to them. I don’t think playing Scottish football would bring out the best in me or that I could contribute anything.

“Well, that’s not something I anticipate, but you never know,” the speaker said. “We’ll see where we are in four years.”

Even if it was never anticipated that he would sign with the Rangers at this point in his career, Ryan Gauld’s remarks imply that switching to Ibrox is virtually impossible at this point.

The remarks also sharply highlight the fallout from a string of red cards and injuries at the Rangers camp.

With Ross McCausland being the most recent player to be “kicked off the field,” Philippe Clement has frequently been criticized for his players’ lack of protection. This season, harsh treatment has also resulted in injuries for players like Todd Cantwell and Danilo.

Following Nathan Moriah-Welsh’s dismissal from Hibs’ match against them this past weekend, Philippe Clement has called on referees to “get these tackles out of the game” by issuing more red cards.

Scottish football has long been accused of trying to balance the scales by prioritising a physical style over a technical one, given the duopoly and financial differences between the top two teams and the others.

Perhaps it’s time for things to start changing, as evidenced by the remarks made by Scotland’s finest technical player of his generation, Ryan Gauld.
