Jordan Poyer is joining a division foe following his release from the Bills last week. Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, the veteran safety is inking a contract with the Dolphins. Poyer’s contract is for a period of one year.
Predicted on a $7.72MM cap hit, the safety was expected to generate $5.5MM in 2024 revenue. Moving on from their defensive stalwart, the Bills did so because they had a roster bonus due later in March. While resulting in a $2MM dead money charge, the move gave Buffalo $5.72MM in cap space.
The previous offseason, the seventh-round pick evaluated his worth on the free market. Having received little outside interest, he consented to a $12.5MM, two-year extension in Buffalo. Poyer signed his first contract with the Bills in 2017 and then inked an extension in 2020, making it his third contract with the team.
Next season, Poyer was invited to the Pro Bowl after earning first-team All-Pro recognition in 2021. Nine interceptions and seventeen pass deflections combined were recorded throughout that time, but in 2023, those totals dropped to zero and four, respectively. The second year in a row that Poyer has finished in the middle of the pack at his position, Pro Football Focus ranked him 46th out of 95 qualifying safeties in 2023.
Given Poyer’s dwindling output, his advanced age, and the comparatively deep safeties free agent class, no team was expected to commit to him in the long run. Given that DeShon Elliott and Brandon Jones are both eligible for free agency, the Dolphins seem like a sensible destination. Elijah Campbell was signed by the organization again, however his role is primarily as a backup. With confidence, the Dolphins may now line up Poyer opposite Jevon Holland.
