As West Ham United gets ready for the second leg of the UEFA Europa League round of 16 against SC Freiburg, defender Vladimír Coufal has urged his colleagues to learn from the second half of Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Burnley.
Despite having a terrible first half performance against Burnley, West Ham was able to turn the tide of the match when David Moyes brought in all of his strikers.
Coufal said, “It’s difficult to describe.” “We had the most horrible first half.” We didn’t handle Burnley well enough before halftime, but sometimes the opposition can outplay you.
“I think we can take a lot of lessons from that performance going ahead, as the second half was more indicative of our playing style.
“We approached things with bravery and positivity. Even though we weren’t perfect, we were still able to support one another and eventually leveled up.
We have a big game on Thursday, and I’m sure we can win if we keep the same mindset and have the backing of our entire fan base.
Although Coufal’s comments are heartening, it’s interesting to see how he used the word “brave.” It makes me question if there is a subliminal message being sent to the manager. Although I believe that bravery in selecting is important, team courage is still important.
The offensive quartet of Mohammed Kudus, Michail Antonio, Jarrod Bowen, and Danny Ings, as well as Lucas Paqueta’s pivotal role, were the main contributors to West Ham’s comeback against Burnley.
Because of this, I think that against Freiburg, attacking intent—rather than merely bravery—will be crucial.
