Before Rangers play Benfica in the Europa League, Philippe Clement must make some important decisions on his starting team.
Tom Lawrence and Dujon Sterling’s goals gave the Bears a 2-2 draw in Lisbon last week. Over the weekend, they defeated Hibernian 2-0 to get to the Scottish Cup semi-final.
However, Tom Lawrenceand Sterling both sustained injuries during the cup victory, so the boss’s ailments are mounting. In order to have the best chance of advancing to the quarterfinals, decisions must be made on his starting lineup.
Since joining on a free transfer, Jack Butland has established himself as the greatest goalkeeper in the nation, and he will undoubtedly start again. However, the defense has been strong since the start of the season.
Due to Clement’s exclusion of Leon Balogun from the squad list, John Souttar and Connor Goldson will continue to play in the center of defense, with captain James Tavernier and the highly effective Ridvan Yilmaz occupying the full-back positions.
John Lundstram has been in excellent form and has been awarded a new contract as a consequence of his performance ahead of them. He will start from the beginning once more, especially because Ryan Jack is probably going to be sidelined due to injury. Mo Diomande and Tom Lawrence should stick by his side to offer energy and a goal threat.
The problems come out wide for Clement though, and they’ve only been further exacerbated recently.
Oscar Cortes is out for two months, while all of Todd Cantwell, Kieran Dowell, Dujon Sterling, Rabbi Matondo, Abdallah Sima and Danilo are all unavailable.
This should see Cyriel Dessers start up front and Fabio Silva stick on the left wing, but Clement might have to bring in outcast Scott Wright early on to provide a threat on the counter.
