Lonzo Ball is making progress, according to Billy Donovan: “Some of the workouts have been really, really positive”

Lonzo Ball, the point guard for the Chicago Bulls, has already started practicing additional on-court exercises that include sprinting, cutting, and jumping, according to head coach Billy Donovan. Ball missed every NBA game from January 2022 till he tore his meniscus in his knee. He’s had three knee surgeries since then, including one in March 2023 including a cartilage transplant.

Before the Los Angeles Clippers game, Donovan spoke with media and mentioned that Ball’s knee has reacted well to controlled exercises and non-contact drills.

“Some of the workouts have been really, really positive and he has progressed,” added Donovan.

“He did a good job responding. Among the things the medical guys have demonstrated to me is that he has good movement. Simply put, I’m incredibly pleased for him and his development. He’s earned this position via a lot of hard work. And maybe he can keep improving.”

It will have been almost three years since Lonzo last played for the Bulls if he is cleared to play when the new season begins. Donovan stated that Lonzo is attempting to achieve something special in light of this.

Donovan remarked, “This is something that is almost unprecedented.”

Although Ball hasn’t yet engaged in any physical contact during his rehabilitation workouts, the physical nature of NBA games is set to change soon. Getting the former UCLA standout used to playing with contact will be the next phase of his rehabilitation.

“I’m speaking more from my perspective, not even medically that he’s going to need for his own well-being getting accustomed to banging and hitting and defending and getting over screens and contact to the rim and getting off bodies,” Donovan explained.
