The Atlanta Falcons appear poised to reinvest heavily in free agency this year after doing so throughout the previous offseason. Just days remain until the formal start of free agency, known as the legal tampering period. According to a recent Pro Football Focus piece, edge rusher Bryce Huff of the New York Jets would be a “perfect” match for the Falcons. “Bryce Huff was a rotational player for the Jets, but he was an absolute weapon off the edge,” writes PFF. “In terms of pass-rush victory percentage, he was only behind Myles Garrett and Micah Parsons, and he tied for ninth place in the NFL in pass-rush grade. If they can afford it, the Falcons might give Huff an opportunity to play almost full-time.”
The Falcons have $37 million in available cap space this offseason, based on forecasts from OverTheCap. But if they sign current Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins, they might finish up with a sizable portion of that pie taken away from their quarterback need. This raises the question of how much Huff costs.
Spotrac projects Huff’s market value to be $9.2 million a year, and they believe he will sign a $36 million four-year contract. Is Huff, an edge rusher who hasn’t yet been a full-time starter, too much to ask of the Falcons? That is feasible, particularly if the Falcons decide to sign a quarterback like Kirksinen for the long haul. Huff, 25, had a stellar year with 29 tackles, 10 for a loss, 10 sacks, and 21 quarterback hits despite not starting a single game for the Jets during the season. Add to that the Falcons’ 22 percent pass-rush win percentage (per ESPN), and it makes sense why the team might be interested in Huff.
