For the first time in nearly two years, Rangers forward Cyriel Dessers was selected for an international recall for managerless Nigeria.
Strangely enough, though, the Nigerian FA has yet to disclose who selected the Super Eagles’ roster or who would coach them in their two friendlies against Ghana and Mali in Morocco.
Dessers was called up for the first time in 2022 for the friendlies in Marrakech, and his 16 goals for Rangers in all competitions was sufficient to warrant a recall for the 29-year-old.
He has four caps for his nation and one goal in a friendly match in the United States versus Mexico.
Following their defeat to Ivory Coast in the African Cup of Nations Final earlier this month, Nigeria severed ties with their previous coach, José Peseiro.
And although declaring it without holding a news conference, they still haven’t disclosed who will be leading their team during the games or even who chose their roster.
Eight players were left off the roster for the tournament, and Sadiq Umar, a former Rangers bust, was brought back.
According to press sources, Finidi George, a former great player for Ajax, may step in as interim manager and continue to lead Nigerian team Enyimba.
Meanwhile, Rangers continues to have big games. The anticipation will grow along with the pressure and the opportunities when the games are completed and the weeks pass.
After losing in the Premiership to Motherwell, they drew with Benfica in the Europa League. Philippe Clement’s next goal is to defeat Hibernian in the Scottish Cup. Rangers make their third-ever appearance in a third competition this week. How long Clement’s side keeps up this juggling act for this term will only become clear with time. Jack Butland is adamant about keeping his focus on the task at hand.
